Eleanor Bauer is a talented American dancer who trained in New York and Brussels, where she now lives. Over the past few years she has made her mark as one of the rising stars of the Belgian and international choreographic scene. Greatly inspired by aesthetic, philosophical and political theory, her work puts genuine choreographic talent coupled with an irresistible sense of humour to the service of a very articulate reflection on the world today. Her new creation, the second part of a trilogy which began with A Dance for the Newest Age (the triangle piece), tackles choreography as a place for exploring alternative forms of living together. Making passionate use of the body, dance and movement, Tentative Assembly (the tent piece) invites performers and the audience to come together to construct a space of shared experience. A place of ephemeral gathering, a utopia, where each individual action allows the emergence of new collective configurations…

The Austrian artist Franz West was recently awarded the Golden Lion for his whole oeuvre at the Venice Biennale. In the early seventies, West made his first portable sculptures or adaptives. He encased everyday objects in gauze and plaster so that the public could pick them up and walk around with them.

Last year, West asked the Bulgarian performer Ivo Dimchev to make two videos using his adaptives as examples of what is possible for the visitors to his exhibitions. In his turn, Dimchev asked if he could create a performance using the sculptures. This resulted in the solo I-on and has now led to a group production for four performers on which Dimchev and West will collaborate closely. West will make some new and larger adaptives with which several bodies can enter into a relationship. Just as in I-on, music will play a major part in this unique relationship between bodies and art objects.

The Bulgarian artist Ivo Dimchev has lived in Brussels since 2009. His work excels in inimitable weird fantasies and an impressive physical idiom and use of the voice. He is himself the director, choreographer, writer, singer and performer of all his pieces. His solo Som Faves was selected for the 2010 Theaterfestival. Last year he both opened and closed the Performatik festival, with I-on and we.art.dog.com.

‘The man with sad eyes, or Wild Eyes’

From rehearsal: RECIPE FOR LIFE

I’m working on a new solo performance for presentation at Volksroom – Ivo Dimchev’s private workspace in Brussels this February.  They say there isn’t an underground scene in Brussels, but I beg to differ…more details soon!

DESCRIPTION: In ‘The man with sad eyes, or Wild Eyes’ Michael Helland excavates his recent creative history to compose a precarious live performance obstacle course. The roles he has played on stage, the roles he plays in public life, and the personal archetypes that define him become musings for an accidental performance that questions our notions of selfhood and propriety.
